Presents
This Wide Night
October 8 – November 13, 2021 at Theater Wit*
Chicago Premiere!
By Chloë Moss
Directed by Georgette Verdin
Lorraine, released from prison after twelve years inside, treks to her former cellmate Marie’s new flat. Marie, dodgy and ashamed of their shared past, hesitates to welcome Lorraine back into her life. But no one makes Marie laugh like Lorraine. Can two friends, uniquely bonded by their former circumstances, find belonging in each other once more? This gutsy story of female friendship and winner of the 2009 Susan Smith Blackburn prize is inspired by real accounts of women in a UK prison. This Wide Night holds and humanizes two formerly incarcerated women in an isolated studio that may or may not be equipped for real freedom.
Performances take place at Theater Wit (1229 W Belmont) where Shattered Globe Theatre is a resident company.
For group discounts, please contact Shattered Globe at groupsales@shatteredglobe.org or by phone at 773-770-0333.
* LIVE STREAMING is available on Thursday, November 4, and Friday, November 12! Tickets are available through Theater Wit’s Box Office
This Wide Night contains brief discussions of the following sensitive topics: incarceration, domestic violence and homicide. There are allusions to past suicide attempts and sexual assault, in addition to a short depiction of violence and intermittent alcohol consumption.
We understand that ticket prices can pose a financial burden and, at times, an obstacle for theatre goers. A number of waived tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for students and community members experiencing access barriers to theatre. If you would like to be added to our Waived Ticket Waitlist, please reach out to info@shatteredglobe.org.
Your Safety is Our Priority!
Your safety is of utmost importance to us. There was encouraging news as the city downgraded the COVID 19 risk. Theater Wit has upgraded its HVAC systems to meet the stringent regulations of Actors Equity. The entire company of This Wide Night, our first show, is fully vaccinated and we have three COVID Compliance Officers responsible for safety protocols for the cast and crew. All patrons at Theater Wit will be required to show proof of full vaccination or a negative PCR test within 48 hours before they even enter the lobby. While the bar is open, you can no longer bring beverages into the theater because masks need to stay on at all times. And the long lines in the lobby queueing up to get the best seat can be avoided because now all seats are reserved.
On the more artistic front, This Wide Night by Chloë Moss is in one act and just over 90 minutes long, so no big crowds in the lobby during intermission. We are also moving all our post play discussions online so that anyone who has seen the show or is interested in the issues can tune in. You will be further protected because, following Actors Equity rules, the set has been moved back so that the actors are six feet away from the first row of seats. And for those who are not yet ready to come back inside the theater, SGT has permission to stream one performance of This Wide Night on a date in early November. We want to meet you wherever you are comfortable.

Join us for a virtual conversation with Alexis Ward (Assistant Director of This Wide Night) and her sister, Jakisha Ward, as they talk about their experience of Jakisha’s reentry after being incarcerated for ten years in Oklahoma.
“I first started getting in trouble due to rebelling against my mother. I was the oldest child and now that I look back on it I guess you could say I wanted siblings closer to my age. So I found that in gangs. While I was in prison I made the best of it by attending college. I completed all of my basics and only have four more classes to complete my associates degree in social psychology. I would love to be a mentor or counselor to young adolescents to try and deter them from prison, gangs and street-life. I’ve been home from prison for 10 years on November 10th. My hobbies include writing. I eventually want to self publish an urban fiction book. Prison taught me the importance of life. It taught me no matter what you do in life, you always have to answer to someone, so choose the right path.”
